Excise sergeants, guards oppose new raids unit

By Chaminda Silva

General Secretary of Excise Sergeants and Guards Association W. M. R. Najithsin yesterday said that the association would complain to the President against the establishment by the government of a special raids unit in addition to the already existing outfits.

"This illegal unit has severely inconvenienced the officers of the Excise Department," Najithsin said, adding that though two officers from the department had been seconded to the particular unit which had been established by the Fiance Ministry, it was against the policies of the Excise Department to hand over its administration to an outside group..

Najithsin said the association would have no objections if the department established a special unit with its own officers in the belief that those already attached to the raiding units were engaged in corruption and irregularities.

He said that his association had no issue with the government and it had already held discussions with the Finance Minister and State Minister of Finance while another discussion with the Finance Minister was scheduled for July 7 and a meeting with the President had been requested.
