Muzammil irked by dissolution of local bodies

Former Colombo Mayor A. J. M. Muzammil yesterday told The Island that the government could have extended the term of 23 Municipal Councils and Urban Councils for a further period of four months.

Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Faizer Musthapha could have used his powers to extend local bodies though the government had decided otherwise, Muzammil said.

Responding to a query, Muzammil said the government had received legal advice before the dissolution.

Legal experts had pointed out that further extension of 23 local authorities would be inimical to the government against the backdrop of courts being moved against the dissolution of some bodies, Muzammil said.

The ex-Colombo Mayor said that he strongly opposed local government bodies being managed by bureaucrats. The former Mayor pointed out that the Minister in charge of the subject had publicly assured the country of having LG polls on several occasions before giving the latest deadline. Minister Musthapha last week declared that polls would be held before Sinhala and Tamil New Year, 2017.
