Judge’s transfer cancelled

The High Court Judge Ratnapura, Anura Kumara, who received transfer orders from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to Moneragala, consequent to an alleged incident involving a stenographer has been deferred. It was widely claimed that as a result of an assault carried out by the judge the collarbone of the stenographer had been injured, but that charge could not be proved.

The Ratnapura Bar Association was of the view that it would support Judge Anura Kumara as the complaint lodged by the stenographer was absolutely baseless. Senior lawyer Hemantha Warnakulasuriya, PC publicly faulted the Bar Association of Sri Lanka for having reported the incident to the Chief Justice without any evidence to support the allegation.

The associations representing the Judges of the High Court and the Lower Court appealed to the JSC on behalf of the High Court Judge.

Warnakulasuriya thanked The Island for having published his letter recently. He said several lawyers were collecting evidence to file charges of ‘contempt of court’ against the web publications responsible for vilifying the Judges and the judiciary.
