No nominations for jailbirds - Duminda

by Norman Palihawadane

General Secretary of the SLFP, Agriculture Minister Duminda Dissanayake said that the party would not give nominations hereafter to anyone who had served time in jail.

As a first step, the party would scrutinise all the applications from party members seeking nominations to contest the forthcoming local government polls and those who had done time would be disqualified.

He said that over ten thousand party members had applied for nominations to contest the local government polls,

"We will go through these applications and find suitable candidates with clean track records. Their education, too, would be taken into consideration," Minister Dissanayake said.

The Minister said gone were the days when rich and powerful persons were selected to contest and won elections by hook or by crook.
