KANDY – Mahanayake theras will shortly decide whether Buddhist monks should stand up when the national anthem is sung.

Most Venerable Anunayake Thera of Malwatte Chapter Dr. Niyangoda Sri Vijithasiri Thero on Sunday (Jan. 2) suggested that there be consensus among the Manahanayke Thero of all sects on that issue. The Ven thero emphasized the need to resolve it urgently.

Ven. Vijithasiri thera was responding to a query by Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne at a meeting in Kandy.

Dr. Vijithasiri Anunayake Thero said that some Buddhist monks rose to their feet but others remained seated while the national anthem was played. "This looks awkward," he said.
