The corrupt and killers involved in protest march - Kiriella

KANDY – Higher Education and Highways Minister Lakshman Kiriella told a media conference at his residence at Dangolla, Kandy yesterday (28) that the participants of the pada yatra from Kandy to Colombo were the corrupt and killers.

"For whose sake are those people staging the pada yatra?" Minister Kiriella asked.

Those joining the walk were greedy for power, Kiriella said.

He said he was thankful to the court for not allowing the pada yatra in the sacred city of Kandy. The corrupt and the killers were not allowed to desecrate the sacred city of Kandy, the Dalada Maligawa and the devales.

"We launched a very successful membership drive in Kandy on July 23. Our leader Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told us to continue the drive further. Accordingly, we organised a membership drive on July 28. We booked three playgrounds in Kandy. Meanwhile, the opposition organised the walk on the same day in Kandy. The court did not allow it in the sacred city," he said.

Kiriella said the opposition had been defeated at two elections.

He said the same organisers of the walk held events like motor car races in Kandy and polluted the sacred city. Those who organised the motor car races did not even respect the advice of the Mahanayake Theras. "The walk is a futile exercise as the present government will continue without interruption," the Minister said.

Minister Kiriella said that powerful leaders of the world particularly from the west were coming to Sri Lanka. "In the past only the rulers of African countries came to Sri Lanka."
