Proposed New Customs Law:

By Madura Ranwala

General Secretary Sri Lanka Independent Government Trade Union and Co-convener of Protecting Customs Trade Unions, R. Wijekoon yesterday vehemently condemned a statement by Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake on July 28 that the latter would implement the New Customs Ordinance at any cost.

Wijekoon told The Island that Finance Minister who published newspaper advertisement requesting public views on the proposed customs law had wasted public money. For, the document had already been drafted and it was a fait accompli."It has already beendrafted for the benefit of racketeers. Now, it is trying to hoodwink the public and gain some legitimacy for the disastrous customs law to be presented to Parliament."

"This is the government we brought to power backing President Maithripala Sirisena and now the Finance Ministry has ignored popular mandate for good governance. The government should listen to us, when implementing a new Customs Bill or white paper or whatever it may be called."

Wijekoon said that the customs trade unions would complain to President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan about the draft laws which was inimical to the interests of the country.
