Combating drug menace: Prelated to the fore

by Norman Palihawadana

Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith yesterday warned the government that it should without hesitation punish any parliamentarian with links to drug barons.

Addressing the residents of Ragama, at Basilica Vidyalaya, following the conclusion of a walk organised by the Catholic Church, in protest against the proliferation of drugs the prelate said the drug menace had spread to schools and the law enforcement officers had to eliminate it root and branch.

He referred to an incident where the students of Basilica Vidyalaaya had smuggled kerala ganja (cannabis) into the school as drug peddlers were openly selling drugs.

It was quite unfortunate that the drug trade continues unabated though the police conducted raids.

Chief Incumbent of Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, Ven. Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangharakkitha said, "The law enforcement officers should crack the whip on the drug trade if we are to save the younger generation from becoming addicts."
