Skills Development and Vocational Training Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe yesterday said that had the Joint Opposition really believed the Office on Missing Persons (Establishment, Administration and Discharge of Functions) Bill posed a threat to Sri Lanka, the grouping could have moved the Supreme Court against it.

Having failed to take legal recourse due to negligence on the JO’s part, Minister Samarasinghe alleged that the grouping was playing politics with a vital issue. Kalutara District MP Samarasinghe was addressing the media at the Government Information Department.

Minister Samarasinghe said that former President and Kurunegala District MP Mahinda Rajapaksa hadn’t been even in the country at the time of the voting.

When The Island pointed out the inconsistency between the OMP Bill and the Right to Information (RTI) Act in respect of a confidentiality clause, Minister Samarasinghe strongly defended constitutional guarantee to protect investigations undertaken by the OMP. Minister Samarasinghe agreed that the RTI Law wouldn’t be applied to information obtained by the OMP in confidence.
