Final agitation to be held in Colombo

Undergraduates will start a protest campaign with parents of all medical undergraduates next week against the Malabe Private Medical College (South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine – SAITM). Convener of the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) Lahiru Weerasekera said.

He said they had already discussed with parents of medical undergraduates of Colombo, Sri Jayewardenepura, Kelaniya, Ruhuna, Peradeniya, Jaffna, Rajarata and Eastern Universities.

"We have educated our parents on the danger of SAITM during the past three weeks," Weerasekera said.

The government had decided to transform the SAITM into a public-private partnership due to their protests, but they wanted the institution abolished.

The previous government had allowed the SAITM to sell degrees, but it was not recognised by the Sri Lanka Medical Council, Weerasekera said, adding now the SAITM management was trying to gain recognition for its so-called MBBS degree from the SLMC.

He said the SAITM had the blessings of ministers in this government, but the SLMC had rejected their request.

"After parents protest at the District level, we will bring them for a massive demonstration in Colombo," Weerasekera said.
