My best knock in cricket – Kaushal Silva

by Rex Clementine

Opener Kaushal Silva, who made an outstanding century under pressure to put Sri Lanka in command in the third Test against Australia at SSC yesterday, said it was his best knock in cricket after batting for over six hours with a split webbing.

Silva split the webbing between his ring finger and little finger on his left hand while fielding on day three and went on to score a memorable hundred to take the game away from the tourists. He had a horror series prior to yesterday’s knock having managed just 18 runs in five innings with a top score of seven. Much wasn’t expected from him yesterday, but the mentally tough Silva went onto post his third Test hundred which gave Sri Lanka hopes of a series whitewash against world’s number one ranked team.

"It was tough as I had a split webbing. Ironically, it helped me as I knew that I couldn’t drive the ball. If you see the first few innings I got out, I was chasing wide outside the off-stump," Silva told journalists yesterday.

"This is my best knock. It was challenging. I was able to prove myself that I am able to do it. Yes I had a bad patch, but I had a good tour of England. I just needed to get 20 or so and I knew that would help me to go all out and get a big one," Silva added.

"When I went to the nets just to have a hit, I had had a couple of injections and my fingers and the arm were numb. I didn’t feel the bat. Since we lost a wicket early, the coach wanted me to go and that gave me the confidence and courage."

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc has done exceptionally well in the series having claimed 24 wickets so far. Only Shane Warne, who took 26 wickets in the 2004 series, has taken more wickets in a series against Sri Lanka among all opponents.

"It’s very tough playing him especially against the new ball. You have to use the heat advantage which is what I did today. You bat longer taking him to his fourth or fifth spell and that’s when it becomes easier to play him. That’s what I did today," Silva further said.
