Civil society wants Mahinda’s bags checked thoroughly

Several civil society organisations have submitted a letter to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe drawing his attention to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s bags and luggage not being properly checked at the airport counters during his recent visits to other countries, sources close to the PM’s office said yesterday.

The letter says that no proper procedure in checking the baggage had been followed when the former president went out and came back to the country during all his recent foreign visits since his defeat at the last presidential election.

The civil organisations in their letter said that this practice of following a lax procedure was setting a wrong precedence, especially as the former president and his family members had been accused of misappropriation of public funds.

The civil organisations have requested the Prime Minister’s involvement to correct the situation immediately, sources added. (SI)
