UNP-SLFP clash leave two hospitalised

Two persons were hospitalised following a clash between the supporters of Katana SLFP Electorate Organiser Deputy Minister Sudarshani Fernandopulle and UNP Western Provincial Council Member Rose Fernando yesterday.

The incident occurred when a group of Deputy Minister’s supporters arrived at Katana to repair a road.

When contacted for comment Deputy Minister Dr Fernandopulle said that group of her supporters was repairing the Father Peo Road in Katana when the supporters of Rose Fernando came there and assaulted them.

She said that the Pradeshiya Sabha had invited the electorate organisers of both parties to attend the renovation work under the rural road development programme and she had been at the site.

She said two of her supporters had been hospitalized.

Western Provincial Council member and UNP electorate organiser Rose Fernando said that villagers had requested her to postpone the road repairs by a few days in view of a funeral in the areas. "Therefore my supporters requested the supporters of the Deputy Minister to suspend the work for three days as per the request of the villagers. Then the supporters of the minister attacked my people. One of my supporters who got assaulted had 16 stitches on his head."
