President Maithripala Sirisena may have referred to political secrets of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, when he threatened to reveal such details recently, Co-Cabinet Spokesman and Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said yesterday in Colombo.

Responding to questions during the weekly Cabinet Press Briefing at the Information Department , Senaratne said that the "secrets" the President had spoken of, may not pertain to the ongoing criminal investigations against some members of the Rajapaksa family, but matters relating to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party ( SLFP ).

His comments came amidst questions being raised in various quarters as to why Srisena had concealed information which was widely believed to be corruption allegations against the Rajapaksa family.

The President addressing a ceremony to mark the first anniversary of the government in Matara warned that if some SLFPers who were threatening to form a breakaway faction of the SLFP went ahead with their plans, he would "reveal secrets that would result in the end of their political careers". They would not be able to walk on the roads, Sirisena added.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has hit back saying no one could prevent anyone from forming a new party.
