Selectors should pick the best team for World Cup – President Rajapaksa

Meeting Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) officials at his residence at Temple Trees last morning, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said it was the responsibility of the national cricket selectors to pick the best team for the forthcoming Cricket World Cup, the Presidential Media Unit said yesterday (Dec. 4). President has also mentioned that everyone in the country expects victory for Sri Lanka in the forthcoming World Cup and therefore it was the responsibility of all to heighten morale of the Lankan players.

‘No player should be omitted due any personal requirements and it is the responsibility of SLC to select the best 15 players (for the World Cup),’ the Presidential Media Unit communiqué said quoting President Rajapaksa.

D. S. de Silva, chairman, SLC, has told President the three World Cup venues in Sri Lanka, now under construction in Colombo, Pallekele and Hambantota, will be handed over to the International Cricket Council by January 15. President has pointed out the importance of having a systematic way to maintain the above three venues after the completion of the World Cup tournament.

SLC officials have then informed President Rajapaksa that the Twenty20 World Cup too is to be held in Sri Lanka in 2012.

Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, sports ministry secretary Udaya Seneviratne, de Silva and SLC secretary Nishantha Ranatunga were among the officials who met President Rajapaksa yesterday. The President has visited R. Premadasa Stadium to inspect the ongoing construction work in it, after his meeting with the cricket officials.
