The Athuruugriya Police have commenced an investigation into a shooting incident, where an unidentified person attempted to kill the estranged wife of an army Colonel at Malabe on Saturday.

Police said the assailant had arrived and waited outside a house at No 329 E, Isuru Pura, Malabe and shot the 43-year-old mother of three when she was in her bedroom.

The shots had been fired through the window, police said.

The injured woman had returned home after having dinner with her three children around 10 pm. She was shot while she was going into her bed room after putting her children to sleep.

The injured woman had separated from her husband, a Colonel over a family dispute. The house had been declared out of bounds for the Colonel by courts, police said.

With injuries on her shoulder and leg the victim was admitted to the Thalangama hospital.

Further investigations are in progress under the supervision of Athurugiriya OIC Chief Inspector Sanjeewa Mahanama. Police had found three empty shells of a 9mm pistol outside the window of the house, CI Sanjeewa said.

The injured woman had been later transferred to the National Hospital and warded at the ICU as her condition was not stable, hospital sources said.

Police said the husband colonel had been summoned to the Athurugiriya station and was released after three hours of questioning and recording a statement as there were no evidences to take him into custody.
