All MPs to get copies of AG’s report on bond controversy

by Saman Indrajith

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya told Parliament that he would distribute copies of the full report by the Auditor General on Central Bank Treasury Bond controversy among all parliamentarians.

The Speaker said that the incumbent Central Bank Governor, too, had agreed to the idea of distributing the complete report among parliamentarians. The Auditor General handed over a concise report to the COPE and the full report containing 1,250 pages to the Speaker on June 29.

COPE Chairman Sunil Handunnetti said the final report of the COPE on the CB Treasury Bonds issue would be ready by Oct. 13. He made this observation when UPFA MP Bandula Gunawardena complained that the COPE investigations on the matter had been delayed. MP Gunawardena said the interim report of the COPE had not given any details on the alleged Treasury Bonds scam.

Replying to the concerns, Handunnetti said the interim report had mentioned the progress of the said investigations. He said the COPE would stick to the timeline it had prepared and present the final report to Parliament without giving in to any pressure. He said Parliament could then have a debate on it and decide on the future course of action.

Chief Opposition Whip and COPE member Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the Central Bank officials including the incumbent Governor were to be summoned before the COPE today.
