Sri Lanka is a great tourist destination in the region but Thai tourists know very little about the country. Therefore, a lot can be done through the Thai media, especially newspapers, to promote Sri Lanka among Thai tourists by the local authorities, Thailand's ambassador to Sri Lanka said.

"More than 70,000 Sri Lankan tourists visit Thailand every year because, much publicity is being given in the Sri Lankan media, especially newspapers and magazines, to Thailand. However, when it comes to Thai newspapers, very few articles are written on Sri Lanka's tourist destinations, Thai ambassador Noppon Adchariyavanich said at the Sri Lanka- Greater Mekong Subregion Business Council's fifth annual general meeting held at the Hilton Colombo Residencies on Wednesday. The AGM was organized by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.

He said Sri Lanka has many interesting tourist destinations, such as, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigriya, but Thai tourists visit only the Kandy temple because they have very little knowledge about Sri Lankan destinations.

"However, in the Sri Lankan media, one will find many newspaper articles on Thailand being published, whereas very little publicity is being given in Thai newspapers on Sri Lanka. That is the main reason why Sri Lanka is not a popular tourist destination among Thai tourists, he said.

Adchariyavanich said that Thailand and Sri Lanka could develop areas, such as, agriculture, fisheries, construction, tourism and consumer products, which have a great potential to improve trade and investment.

He also said that the Greater Mekong Subregion is an emerging market in the region, which could yield ripe economic benefits in may ways if we could promote trade and investment in the region.

Myanmar ambassador Min Thein Zan said that Myanmar has moved out of military rule and now follows true democracy under the new administration. Therefore, trade and investment could be promoted in the region without any issues.

He said that Myanmar is a good place to invest in because now law and order in the country is in place after ending military rule.

Minister of Primary Industries Daya Gamage who attended the event as a special guest said that the government has a major plan to double export revenue by 2020, whereas, Thailand, Bangladesh and Vietnam double their exports every five years.

He said that the Greater Mekong Subregion could be a great market place to promote trade and investment in the region.
