Nishadi breaks triple jump record with impressive feat

Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda athlete Ridma Nishadi joined a limited number of athletes to have cleared the 12 metres mark in the triple jump at school level when she cleared 12.21 metres to establish a new meet record on day two of the Sir John Tarbet Senior Athletics Championship at Diyagama on Wednesday.

The Under-18 girls’ triple jump meet record had stood at 11.67 metres since 2007. Nishadi broke the record held by P.V.D. Priyadharshani of St. Thomas’ College, Matara to win the gold.

In track events, athletes from Ratnayake Central, Walala and Maliyadeva, Kurunegala made their presence felt as they joined the list of record breaking runners.

Dilshi Kumarasinghe of Ratnayake Central, Walala clocked two minutes and 13.4 seconds to establish a new meet record in the Under-18 Girls 800 metres. Ratnayake Central made a clean sweep of medals in that discipline with G.N. Jayasinghe (2:20.7secs) and M.S. Weerasekara (2:21.2 secs) finishing second and third respectively.

The Under-18 400 metres heats saw Pasindu Kodikara of Maliyadeva, Kurunegala stopping the clock at 48.5 seconds to establish a new record. Kodikara broke the record (48.79 secs) held by Harsha Chathuranga of St. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya and Venura Lakmal of Maris Stella College.
