KANDY: The joint administration formed by the two major political parties had prevented the imposition of sanctions on Sri Lanka by the western powers, said Higher Education and Highways Minister Lakshman Kiriella at the annual prize giving of Sri Rahula College, Katugastota.

The creation of a peaceful atmosphere based on unity and reconciliation among communities, had helped the new government win the confidence and recognition of the international community, the Minister noted.

The world powers now had a high opinion about Sri Lanka owing to the steps taken by the present government led by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Minister Kiriella said, adding that people now enjoyed freedom as never before.

Kiriella also claimed that there was right to information and freedom of expression, fundamental rights of people were safeguarded and everybody had benefited from the rekindling of democracy.

The Minister said steps were being taken to enable the highest number of students to enter the universities.
About 80 per cent of those who passed the GCE A/Level at present could not get into universities. Every student should be able to receive their education in the medium of his or her choice.
