Police had nabbed 280 wanted criminals and other offenders during the special operation it conducted within the Western Province on Thursday night, police headquarters sources said yesterday.

They said among those taken into the custody were 80 suspects and criminals who had been evading the police though there were arrest warrants against them and around 75 drunk drivers.

Around 1,000 policemen and women were deployed in the special operation that started around 11 pm on Thursday and ended at 2 am yesterday.

Police headquarters issued a stand-by order to officers in charge of all police stations in the province on Thursday afternoon hours before the operation.

Western Province Senior DIG Nandana Munasinghe said the special crime prevention operation covered all areas of the province. He said the operation had been kept a secret and secrecy helped the police to carry out the operation successfully.
