SC orders progress report on payment of compensation to victims of Uma Oya

By Chitra Weerarathne

The Supreme Court yesterday ordered the Uva Director of Agriculture to submit the completed progress report on the supply of drinking water and the granting of monetary compensation to the petitioner residents of Bandarawela, who have complained that they have been adversely affected by the Uma Oya Development Project.

The Supreme Court, in an earlier hearing, ordered that the petitioners be compensated suitably.

The farmers whose cultivation projects were badly affected are to be granted financial compensation. The persons denied drinking water too are to be granted relief by making sources of clean drinking water available.

The Centre for Environmental Justice had complained to the court that the Uma Oya Project, meant to supply irrigation facilities to Hambantota, had ruined the environment in the Bandarawela area.

Counsel Ravindranath Dabare appeared with Nimal Wickramasinghe for the petition organisation.

Deputy Solicitor General Indika Demuni de Silva appeared for the Attorney General.

The Bench comprised Chief Justice K. Sripavan and Justice Anil Gooneratne.
