The incumbent government is swindling public funds while calling the former government a set of thieves, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said.

"The government is stealing from the public purse while calling others thieves,"

Rajapaksa said, addressing the public after attending an opening ceremony at the Sri Sumana Saman Devalaya in Deraniyagala on Friday (28).

"The incumbent government is suffering from election phobia. Forget the much-delayed local government elections, they do not even hold elections for cooperative societies for fear of losing them. Education is in a total mess. Mihin Lanka airline earned profits during our times. Now they have sold it off saying it is making losses. The government is fleecing innocent patients through the VAT. The government does not need to go for VAT increase if it stops stealing public money. It entered into a deal with a private company and gave away 15 billion rupees and then increased VAT to recover the monies.

"Today, an elephant cannot be kept in a temple or a devale. The government takes them away. The elephant we gave to the Kataragama devale has been taken away and given to the Pinnawala elephant orphanage. Don’t such actions invoke the wrath of gods?

"The President has taken on the Criminal Investigation Department and the Financial Crimes Investigation Division.

Rajapaksa said national security was in jeopardy and people wouldn’t be able to visit Jaffna before long.

Among those present were MPs Kanaka Herath, Tharaka Balasuriya, members of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council Wathsala Jinadari, Ajith Shaminda, former Deputy Minister of Agriculture Y.G. Padmasiri and former MP Anuruddha Polgampola.
