Pera medical student drowns in Black Pool reservoir

Badulla Police recovered the body of Peradeniya undergraduate drowned in the Black Pool natural reservoir at Spring Valley Estate Badulla on Friday.

The victim was identified as HA Jayan Kavishanka Dharamsiri (21) of Bodhiraja Mawatha, Algama, Medagama in Warakapola. He was a student of the Peradeniya Medical Faculty and was vacationing with one of his friends when the accident occurred.

His friend Shanika Yuvantha Wanigaratne, giving evidence, told Police that he and Jayan had come to Badulla to stay with one of his uncles at Imbulgoda Badulla on 26. They were planning to climb the Namunukula Mountain. "We set off early in the morning climbed the mountain. On our way back we saw the Black Pool and decided to bathe. I saw Jayan lose his balance and fall into the water. He came up once and shouted for help. I too shouted for help and residents came to assist us but we could not find Jayan. Then the residents informed the Badulla Police, who recovered the body."

Badulla Acting Magistrate Sarath Weerasinghe visited the scene of the tragedy and ordered police to send the body to JMO Badulla for the post-mortem and submit a report to the court. Accordingly Badulla JMO held the post mortem and concluded the death had been caused by drowning. Police handed over the body to the victim’s father.
