Fuller bench requested to hear PM’s proposal to Speaker

Attorney-at-Law Karunananda Kodituwakku has requested the Supreme Court to hear before a fuller bench, the fundamental rights violation petition, filed by him alleging that, the request made by the Prime Minister, to the Speaker of Parliament, to revoke the Supreme Court judgement in the Sinharasa Case is a violation of his fundamental right to freedom from arbitrary treatment and his right to freedom of expression. He wants the court to declare the same and direct the Speaker not to proceed with the request made by the Prime Minister.


Among the respondents are the Attorney General for the President, the Prime Minister and the Speaker of Parliament.


Yesterday, time was given for parties to file written submissions.


Subsequently, the Court will deliver the order on whether a fuller bench will hear this petition, it was stated when the petition was called before the Supreme Court, yesterday.


K. Kaneg Ishwaran, President’s Counsel, appeared for the Prime Minister.
