Heroin dealer’s peanut cover busted near shrine

By Sarath de Silva

Police recently nabbed a heroin peddler who retailed the banned substance using his small peanut business as a cover near the historic Navagamuwa Pattini Devale on Saturday.

The suspect is a 45-year-old resident of Navagamuwa.

The suspect has divulged that he had run the business of selling heroin in sachets to his customers for a long time, police said.

He had brought the narcotic from Dehiwala and sold them in retail sachets to addicts coming to his peanut vending hut, police said. Other vendors in the area had complained to police of unusual increase of heroin addicts in the vicinity of the shop. Police after observing the trend deployed a decoy to purchase heroin from the peddler, who fell for the trap.

The suspect was to be produced before courts after interrogation, police said.

Further investigations are being conducted by a team of policemen including IP Pandula, PCs Waruna (60923), Asanka (67192), Bandara (85980) Civil Defence Force cadre Bandara (71952) under the supervision of Navagamuwa OIC Inspector Manjula Silva.
