A clash between a cook and the driver of a priest training centre at Talangama had ended with the former being stabbed to death by the latter on Saturday night, Police said yesterday.

The victim has been identified as Rathugamage Joseph Saman Kumara Fernando (45) of No 542/B/2 of Dandugama Road, Ja-Ela, police said. He had been working as a cook at the Holy Trinity Centre on Robert Gunawardena Mawatha at Talangama-Battaramulla.

According to police on the tragic night, the cook after preparing dinner for the priests and trainees at the centre had remained in the kitchen and seen the suspect driver coming there and consuming food from the pots and pans. The cook had reprimanded the driver for putting his hands into utensils and that had led to an argument, police were told. The driver then went back to his quarters, come back with a knife and stabbed the cook.

Police found two stab injuries in the abdomen and one in the neck of the victim. The priests rushed to the scene after a woman residing in the centre alerted them and took the injured to the Talangama Hospital. Since the victim was suffering from serious injuries, Tanlangama hospital authorities transferred him to the National Hospital. He however succumbed to his injuries while being treated at the Intensive Care Unit of the NHSL.

Police said that the suspect driver, who was from Kalutara, had escaped with the weapon and a special team of policemen had been deployed to trace his whereabouts.
