Pharmacies that do not comply with reduced medicinal drug prices are to be sealed.

Cabinet Spokesman and Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne told a news conference in Colombo yesterday that in an unprecedented move the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe government had slashed the prices of 48 drugs, but the newly formed Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) led by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had dismissed it as insignificant.

Multinational drug companies had had a field day under the Rajapaksa regime, but that would not be tolerated by the present government, Senaratne said.

"Our flying squads are active and they will nab any pharmacy that fleeces innocent patients despite the prices of 48 drug varieties being reduced," the Minister said, adding that such establishments would be closed down.

He revealed that the Health Ministry was considering the possibility of introducing more quality drugs at reasonable rates.

Businessmen who sold life saving drugs with 200 to 300 percent profit margins were committing a crime against humanity, Senaratne noted.
