If requested, President may seek a second term – Bandara

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Youth Front Chairman former Deputy Minister Shantha Bandara said yesterday that the symbol of the newly formed Sri Lanka People’s Front (SLPF), ‘flower bud’ was not a winning symbol.

He stressed that there was no need to compare former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and President Sirisena as they would not run against each other at another election in the future. Former President Rajapaksa would never be the President of this country again as he was barred by law from contesting again.

But if the SLFP requested President Sirisena to contest for another term of Presidency he would be able to do so, he said.

Addressing the media at the SLFP headquarters in Colombo, he said the flower bud symbol had not won a single election and not even a by-election and, therefore, the newly formed SLPP was not in any way a threat to the SLFP.

Political parties formed to advance personal agendas had never won elections in the past, Bandara said, claiming that a political party should be people friendly and it should have such an ideology and policies behind it.

The Youth Front Chairman noted that the majority of the great senior SLFP politicians were with President Maithripala Sirisena and 80 per cent of the SLFP leaders belonged to the second generation and 90 per cent of third generation party leaders were also with President Sirisena.

He lashed out at the Joint Opposition, accusing it of slinging mud at President Sirisena.

Referring to the other political parties in the Joint Opposition, Bandara said other politicians including Wimal Weerawansa, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Dinesh Gunawardena and Udaya Gammanpila had not broken up their political parties and joined the new party but only SLFPers had done so.
