Basil denies having secret deal with UNP

Dismissing Minister Dilan Perera’s (SLFP/UPFA) recent claim that he had been collaborating with the UNP, Basil Rajapaksa has alleged that Perera is obviously having a deal with the UNP.

Addressing a gathering at Nelum Mawatha office of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Basil Rajapaksa said on Saturday that the Rajapaksas, too, had used Dilan Perera, when they were in power. The former Minister spoke after 13 out of 14 ex- members of Minuwangoda Pradeshiya Sabha and seven out of eight member of the Minuwangoda Municipal Council joined the newly formed Sri Lanka People’s Front (SLPF).

Basil Rajapaksa claimed that the new party had been formed to protect the interests of former UPFA members of local government bodies. Accusing new SLFP leadership of neglecting those who had been the party’s strength at grassroot level, Rajapaksa said that there were repeated calls for the formation of a new outfit. "People told us not to any election without the blessings of Mahinda Rajapaksa."

He said the formation of the SLPF shouldn’t be considered as a strategy directed against any individual as it had been founded to fulfil a long felt political need.

Basil Rajapaksa emphasized that the neither Rajapaksas nor those working with them had any secret deals with the UNP. Pointing out that the Rajapaksas had been repeatedly targeted, he said of them he had come under the worst forms of harassment.

Those SLFPers who had accepted portfolios in the government should vote against the budget if they were genuinely desirous of defeating the UNP and to paving the way for a return of the SLFP, Rajapaksa said. (SF)
