GL dismisses Sumanthiran
comment as racist utterance

By Harischandra Gunaratna

Former UPFA External Affairs Minister and Joint Opposition member Prof G.L.Pieris yesterday dismissed as a racist utterance, a statement made by TNA parliamentarian M. Sumanthiran that the accused in the Raviraj murder case had been freed because the jury were all Sinhalese.

Prof. Pieris, addressing a news conference at the Dr. N.M.Perera Centre at Borella, accused Sumanthiran of sowing seeds of hatred instead of promoting reconciliation.

The former law professor said: "Sumanthiran’s comments are unwarranted as the accused had the choice of deciding whether their case would be heard by a bench comprising judges or by a jury and no one had tampered with the case.

"The racist comments made by Sumanthiran and the likes were a stepping stone to take the war heroes who were responsible for bringing back peace to the gallows."

The left stalwart and former Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara said the crisis in the unity government was deepening but the UNP was making a vain attempt to hide it from the masses.

Nanayakkara said UNP was pretending to be against some serious issues concerning the country but when it came to voting in Parliament on these issues it backtracked.

Pivithuru Hela Urumaya leader Udaya Gammanpila was of the opinion that once the Hambantota Port was sold to the Chinese, Chinese security forces would come here to protect their country’s interests.
