JHU lashes out at Minister Mustapha’s behaviour

The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) yesterday claimed that the UNP was planning to hold the local government elections under the old system due to the delay in getting a signature on the delimitation committee report.

Western Provincial Council member Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe told a media conference that all members representing SLFP, TNA and JVP had signed the report, but the UNP nominee had still not placed his signature.

The JHU also condemned the behaviour of Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils Faizer Muthapha when the final report was handed over by the head of the five member review committee Asoka Peiris on Monday.

Warnasinghe said the minister’s behaviour was an insult to public officials too.

"The local government elections have been delayed nearly two years due to alleged errors in the original delimitation report," he said, adding that the elections could not be further delayed as many problems had arisen due to absence of elected representatives in the local government bodies.

Warnasinghe said the JHU wanted local government polls conducted under the new system.

Warnasinghe said the electoral system would be changed in parallel with the Constitutional reforms.

"The JHU’s proposals to the new Constitutional reforms have already been handed over to the President, Prime Minister and the Committee," he said.
