Cricket has lost one of its true fans with the death of singer Deepal Silva.

Deepal was a huge cricket fan and never missed a game when the national cricket team was involved. It is said that he didn’t accept shows if they clashed with cricket matches.

After hearing his death, former captain Sanath Jayasuriya tweeted.

"Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of a legend of Sri Lankan music. Deepal Silva, you will be missed. May you attain nibbana," former Test captain Sanath Jayasuriya tweeted.

"Shocked to hear the death of one of the great talents of music industry. Rest in Peace Deepal," former fast bowler Chaminda Vaas tweeted.

Deepal used to visit most cricket matches played in Sri Lanka and was friends with many Sri Lankan cricketers. He was an extremely creative artist capable of coming up with humour instantly.

Once after a game at Dambulla, Deepal was heading back to his hotel in Habarana.

One of his friends was driving the vehicle while Deepal was singing with his other friends. As they were passing Sigiriya, Deepal sang the popular song of Prince Udaya Priyantha, ‘Sigiriye kurutu geetha lassanai....".

His vehicle at that point was stopped by the police at a check point. Deepal instantly change the lyrics into, ‘Sigiriye OIC lassanai....’

The cops smiled and let him go.

He will be missed.

He was 50-years-old at the time of his death.
