Priyankara Jayaratne wanted criminal investigations against him stalled – Govt.

….. but President Sirisena refused

State Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Priyankara Jayaratne had quit his portfolio and crossed over to the Opposition, since the government refused to stall criminal investigations against him, Co -Cabinet Spokesman and Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said yesterday.

Answering questions at a news conference in Colombo, Senaratne revealed that Jayaratne who was elected to Parliament on the UPFA ticket, had requested President Maithripala Sirisena to intervene and stall the on going inquiries against him by the law enforcement authorities, which included corruption charges, but the President had declined.

The Minister said it was thereafter that Jayaratne had resigned his portfolio and joined the Opposition. " I mentioned the exact reason, since you’ll asked me."

If it was former President Mahinda Rajapaksa , he would have told the whole world the reason for any Minister deserting him , but President Srisena was not like that,Senaratne added.
