Police fail to provide necessary security to Weerawansa

NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa yesterday complained in parliament that his privileges had been breached as he could not attend House sessions on time as police failed to provide security on his way from the remand prison to the Parliament.

Weerawansa raising a privilege issue said that the police had refused to provide him with the due security.

He was unable to attend the sittings on time and join the debates as his Police security was delayed. He also said that the Prison authorities had asked Police security from Bambalapitiya Police Field Force Headquarters.

The MP requested Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to give directions to police to provide him with necessary security on time.

He said that one Sargent in the Bambalapitiya police had said yesterday morning that armed policemen could not be sent for protection as there were not enough policemen there.

"So the Prison authorities took measures to send me to Parliament with two constables attached to the police post in Prison", Weerawansa said. "This has breached my privileges", he said asking as to how police could act so irresponsibly.

Speaker Jayasuriya observed that he would look into the matter of police refusing to provide MP Weerawansa with the necessary security.

The Speaker said that he would take measures not to repeat the same and protect his dignity. The Speaker agreed with the right of Weerawansa as a parliamentarian to attend the sittings on time.

Speaker Jayasuriya said he would meet the police and prison officers shortly and resolve the issue.
