Two policemen attached to the Ministerial Security Division have been arrested by Mount Lavinia police for sexually harassing a female Russian tourist on the Mount Lavinia beach on Saturday evening, police sources said. yesterday

The Russian tourist has complained to the policemen patrolling the beach that two men had approached and squeezed her buttocks. When the policemen, a sub inspector and a constable, inquired from the two men regarding the tourist’s complaint they had responded that they too were from police and argued against them being questioned. The two men were drunk and assaulted the sub inspector and the constable and tried to escape. The uniform of the constable had been torn and his insignia too had been damaged by the attackers. Police with the help of Navy men on duty nearby nabbed the fleeing suspects.

After further inquiry the police found that the suspects were a constable (27) and a constable driver (47) attached to the MSD. Both were married and were from Mirihana and Kantale. They were drunk at the time of the arrest and police found a dark coloured plastic bottle in which they brought liquor to the beach. There were witnesses who told police that the two were also seen consuming ganja on the beach, police said.

When the suspects were taken to the Mount Lavinia police station, they shouted at a senior officer in filthy language, police said.

The two MSD men were to be produced before Mount Lavinia Magistrate. Further investigations were in progress by Mount Lavinia HQI Rohana Pushpakumara under the supervision of Mount Lavinia SSP Chandana Atukorala.
