England Under-19 reached 249 for four wickets at stumps on the back of a fine half century by captain Lewis Gregory, in reply to Sri Lanka Under-19’s first innings total of 415 on the second day of their first Youth Test here at the Galle International Stadium yesterday. England openers reached 50 runs in 49 balls but paceman Sanitha de Mel managed to apply breaks to their speedy run when he accounted for both the openers in successive overs. Opener Sam Wood’s 40-ball stay ended when a de Mel delivery got an edge to Dananjaya de Silva at gully. Wood scored 25 runs with five fours. One over later, de Mel bowled Daniel Bell-Drummond for 35. De Mel’s impressive ten-over opening spell conceded just 26 runs. In contrast, Chathuranga Kumara, who opened bowling with de Mel, was wayward and cost him 39 runs in six overs.

The removal of the openers slowed down England innings but a 98-run stand between Gregory and Ben Foakes helped them to post a good reply to Sri Lanka’s big first innings total. Their 30-over stay came to an end when spinner Maduka Liyanapathiranage, who bowled the bulk of overs on Saturday, clean-bowled Foakes for 46.

Maduka bowled 24 overs on Saturday for one wicket while Saranga Rajaguru took the prize wicket of Gregory. Rajaguru, who commenced bowling from the press box end, had results immediately when he was called to bowl from the Galle fort end.

He had George caught at slips by Bahanuka Rajapaksha for 62 runs. George scored nine fours in his 125-ball innings and added 42 runs for the fourth wicket with Ateeq Javid.  Javid took England to stumps with Adam Rossington.

Sri Lankan bowlers conceded 31 extras as against England’s six.

Earlier, England found overcast conditions to their liking as their seam bowlers rattled the Sri Lankan tail, either side of an advanced lunch break.

Skipper Gregory and Tom Milnes took two wickets apiece to finish off the tail quickly while Shiv Thakor accounted for Kaushalya Gajasinghe, who took the hosts pass the 400-run mark with 35 runs. Skipper George was the pick of the bowlers for England with three wickets.

Except Gajasinghe and Duleeka Thissakuttige (13), no other Sri Lankan late-order batsman managed to reach double figures as they found difficult to negotiate the new ball moving under overcast conditions. The last six batsmen added just 41 runs to their overnight score.
