‘Disbanding of prison intelligence unit led to attack on Black Maria ’

By Dasun Edirisinghe

Former Minister of Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation Chandrasiri Gajadeera yesterday alleged that the attack on a Black Maria in Kalutara was a result of the present government disbanding the intelligence unit of Sri Lanka Prisons.

Addressing the media at Dr N.M. Perera Centre in Borella, he said the present government had assigned the intelligence officers in Prisons to carry out internal tasks.

"Under the Mahinda Rajapaksa government, we formed an intelligence unit in the Prisons Department to protect suspects, especially when they were transported from prisons to courts and back and prevent illegal activities in prisons," Gajadeera said.

Gajadeera also accused this government of taking credit for constructing a modern prison to international standards at Angunakolapelessa.

"Former Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa and I laid the foundation stone for the Angunakolapelessa prison and all work was done by the previous government, but this government will open it next month," he said.
