Slintec Academy to Emerge as the Leading Post Graduate degree provider in Advanced Technologies

Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology Academy (SLINTEC ACADEMY), is offering a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degree Programs in Nano/Advanced Technology with a view to providing high quality post graduate education to those interested in this field in Sri Lanka. SLINTEC ACADEMY will function as a non-state, not-for-profit post graduate degree provider in technology, a news release on the development said.


Nanotechnology and other Advanced Technologies are fast growing areas of Science and Technology which cover the entire spectrum of sciences. They include new materials, coatings, medicine, agriculture, textiles, nutraceuticals, water, food, biotechnology and synthetic biology. Many countries in the world, and particularly countries in the region, and in Sri Lanka, research carried out at the Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC), have invested in these areas with a view to enhancing national development and training of scientists. SLINTEC ACADEMY is poised introduce post graduate education through research and innovation by harnessing on the successes of SLINTEC.


SLINTEC is a recognized pioneer in Nanotechnology and Advanced technology research in Sri Lanka. Being the first public-private research institute in Sri Lanka, it has made significant progress over the past seven and a half years. It holds several ground breaking patents in the area of nanofertilizer where technology transfer to Nagarjuna Fertilizer Ltd., India, in 2012 was a pioneering event.


In addition, research in the apparel sector has led to the filing of several more patents where one has been transferred to Lankem. In the mineral sector, SLINTEC has initiated a pilot plant to convert Ilmenite sand to TiO2, a process to purify the Murunkan clay deposit, initiated a pilot plant to produce graphene oxide, pioneered futuristic research to convert TiO2 sand to Ti metal and begun extracting Thorium from Monazite sand; the latter effort is envisaged to augment future nuclear 0energy needs of Sri Lanka.


In addition, SLINTEC has now expanded its research portfolio to include synthetic organic chemistry and nutraceuticals. The focus of synthetic organic chemistry research is to develop Advanced Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and cater to the newly emerging pharma sector in Sri Lanka.


Recent innovations in technology and scientific approaches to Nano and Advanced Technologies make this an exciting time period to learn and do research in this area. The research-led teaching methods will allow students to learn cutting-edge knowledge from leading academics. SLINTEC ACADEMY M.Phil./Ph.D. students also have the opportunity to conduct their own research, from design right through to experimentation, data gathering using state of the art instruments ranging from Scanning Electron Microscope, Transmission Electron Microscope among a plethora of high end equipment, data analysis and publishing research papers in high impact journals.


 


In addition, students will do research relevant to the industry, and therefore will closely work with research counterparts from the industry. Carrying out research at such close proximity to the industry will maximize the chances of research moving into development and eventually to commercialization. SLINTEC has the full capacity to offer the proposed M.Phi./Ph.D. degree programmes which has high quality course content, effective delivery modes, industry related research and evaluation methods employing a highly a competent and motivated team of professionals. Thus, the proposed M.Phil./Ph.D. degree programme will train research talent in Sri Lanka while serving the research needs of the industry at the same time, the release said.


 


It is envisaged that those who obtain the M.Phil degree will either work within the Sri Lankan industry or go on to do their Ph.D. in the best Universities in the world. Those who do their Ph.D. will either do research in the industry or join the academia or go to Universities abroad for post-doctoral training, it added.


Currently, Sri Lanka is marching towards a smart economy which is based on the knowledge based services. In this journey, development of the right talent pool is a vital requirement and the current post-graduate programmes offered by many universities and institutes are not aligned towards such outcome based professional training. Therefore, it is timely and appropriate to introduce a post graduate degree programme which is aligned with the global trends and more importantly which is able to cater for local demands. The Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology was established with envisions being the leading Research and Innovation platform for Sustainable Nanotechnology in Asia thereby, transforming Sri Lanka into a strong Nanotechnology-focused nation.


 


Currently, the institute is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for advanced materials research and has attracted an expert talent pool with global training in world leading universities with the view of developing a talent pool which is aligned with the global standard, a now MPhil/Ph.D. programme in Nano and Advanced Materials under the umbrella of SLINTEC Academy.


The strategic plan of the SLINTEC ACADEMY seeks to leverage the strengths of SLINTEC that have been developed over past eight years and to build upon them and secure new strengths. The strategic plan proposes to attract the brightest students from all scientific disciplines from Sri Lanka which will in turn produce M.Phil. graduates sought after by leading global universities for their Ph.D. programmes. It envisages to establish a reputation as a creator of new innovations and technologies for induatrial and national needs and emerge as the leading M.Phil. degree provider in Nano-and Advanced technology in Sri Lanka.


 


SLINTEC ACADEMY will nurture the young faculty doing research on transformational technologies with potential to address the societal challenges in areas such as water, agriculture and health.
