‘I am a Sri Lankan citizen and proud of my motherland’– Minister SamarasingheMarch 18, 2017, 7:56 pm
Dismissing a claim that he held citizenship in Switzerland, Skills Development and Vocational Training minister, Mahinda Samarasinghe said that he has always remained a Sri Lankan citizen.
"There has never been a change in that status. In my 61 years, Sri Lanka has been my country and I am proud to be a citizen of my motherland", he told a news conference.
Debunking a claim by opposition Galle district parliamentarian, Geetha Kumarasinghe, the minister clarified that the MP’s assertion to a weekend newspaper that he is a citizen of Switzerland is absolutely baseless. "I have never sought citizenship in any other country as Sri Lanka was where I was born and belong to".
Samarasinghe said that though a person enjoyed the right to hold citizenship in another country, this practice cannot apply to politicians as they are the people’s representatives.
