The Joint Opposition (JO) yesterday accused the government of plotting to sabotage its Habaraduwa rally on Saturday. Addressing the JO’s weekly media briefing, Galle District MP Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said the relevant authorities had given permission for the rally, but the Habaraduwa police had informed them on Tuesday that the event could not be held.

He said the SLFP had removed him and Galle District MP Mohan Priyadarshana de Silva as organisers of Akmeemana and Ratgama electorates respectively in view of the rally.

"We hail from SLFP families and the people of Galle are with us," Dr. Pathirana said.

The son of late SLFP stalwart Richard Pathirana said the present SLFP leadership had reduced the party to an appendage of the UNP.

Dr. Pathirana said the JO’s first rally at the District level would be held against postponing elections, political witch hunts and the suppression of people’s rights. Colombo District MP Udaya Gammanpila said National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa had commenced a hunger strike yesterday as he had been denied bail by the High Court.

He said the government was trying to neutralise Weerawansa by keeping him behind bars.

"People facing the same charges as Weerawansa have been bailed out, but he is still kept in prison because he has refused to give in."

Gammanpila said they would take to streets against the government interfereing in the judiciary.
