National records shattered as athletic season begins

Dilip Ruwan wins men’s 400 metres.


Olympian Manjula Kumara proved that he has still got the hunger to strive for better heights and triple-jumper Vidusha Lakshani, thrower Ayesha Maduwanthi, steeplechase athlete Nilani Ratnayake, decathlete Ajith Kumara Karunathilaka and Suriyawewa athlete Gayanthika Abeyratne established new national records on the final day of the National Athletics trials at Diyagama on Sunday.


Lakshani cleared a distance of 13.64 metres to improve her own national record in the women’s triple jump.


In the women’s steeplechase Nilani Ratnayake clocked 10:03.94 seconds to improve her national record.


Army’s Ajith Kumara Karunathilaka aggregated 6884 points in the decathlon to improve his national record.


Ayesha Maduwanthi cleared a distance of 47.92 metres to improve the women’s hammer throw record.


Manjula Kumara cleared a seasonal best height of 2.25 metres to win the men’s high jump and a number of other athletes produced impressive performance in the season opening event.


There were a number of other impressive performances on the final day.


Former national record holder Waruna Lakshan Dayaratne achieved his personal best as he cleared a distance of 82.19 metres to win the javelin throw.


While sprinter Rumeshika Ratnayake won a sprint double with a 11.92 seconds dash in the 100 metres, Dilip Ruwan clocked 46.46 seconds to win the men’s 400 metres.
