UPFA General Secretary Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday warned a potential irredeemable split of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) if its members participate in the May Day rally organised by the Prof. G.L Peiris-headed Sri Lanka People’s Front (SLPF).

Addressing a press conference at SLFP Headquarters in Colombo, Minister Amaraweera urged the SLFP members to participate in its May Day rally scheduled to be held at Getambe in Kandy.

He said all arrangements had been finalised to hold the SLFP May Day rally on a grand scale and the rally would be held in a manner that minimises any inconveniences to motorists and commuters who travel via Kandy on May 1.

Minister Amaraweera said that the SLFP this year would hold a May Day rally which would go down history as one of the most successful and biggest.

"I have no doubt that SLFP members will turn up in their numbers at Getambe, Kandy, for this historic rally," he said.

"The popularity of the party will no doubt be revealed at the upcoming May Day celebrations," Minister Amaraweera said.

Meanwhile the Joint Opposition (JO) has planned to hold the May Day rally at Galle Face Green under the patronage of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa under the banner of Sri Lanka People’s Front (SLPF).
