Under instructions of the Environment Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, the Central Environment Authority Chairman Charitha Herath and Royal College School Development Committee Secretary Upali Jinadasa signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a compost plant and solid waste management project for Rs. 2.8 million at the school premises.

Through the College’s bio gas plant headed by College Warden Aruna De Silva, the College saves Rs. 25,000 per month. Rainwater harvesting helps the College to collect 30,000 litres of water during the rainy season which is used mostly for gardening and the organic garden maintained by the Principal. The School is also well known for its initiatives in taking maximum use of solar power.

The agreement was signed yesterday at the Royal College, Colombo, with the participation of Royal College Principal Upali Gunasekara, Minister Yapa, students, well wishers and EDEX officials.

"As a country we cannot lag behind, we cannot say can’t adjust. We must be ready to counter environmental issues as done in Great Britain using sea water for electricity generation," Minister Yapa said.

He commended the school Principal and students for finding solutions while preserving the environment within the school premises.

Yapa said that under the Solid Waste Management Project 60 projects were completed and the immediate goal was to double it within this year.

He said that when he was planning to come out with solid waste projects he was happy to see Royal College had already initiated it.

Yapa also said that plans are underway to commence a Green Award Project for which school children could also take part.

He said that despite Government doing everything possible to preserve the environment, the challenge remains to preserve the rich biodiversity and mitigate Climate Change.

Royal College Principal Upali Gunasekara appreciated the support rendered by the Government to develop green initiatives of the school.
