N&E hartal with backing of Hakeem, Bathiudeen

A hartal organised by the Tamil National Council in the North and East of Sri Lanka disrupted public life yesterday.

The Tamil Edlam Liberation Organisation’s National Organiser M. K. Sivajilingam said the civil disobedience campaign was a strong protest against the government which did not heed the suffering Tamil and Muslim people.

The protesters demanded that the government release lands which were still held by the security forces, probe enforced disappearances and provide employment to thousands of unemployed youth in the North and the East.

Sivajilingam told The Island that the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), G.Ponnambalam’s Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF), Rauff Hakeem’s Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), Rishad Bathiudeen’s Sri Lanka Mahajana Party and several non-political Tamil and Muslim groups had backed the protest. He said they would continue their protests until they won their demands.
