Govt. earned Rs. 650 mn in taxes from TV stations

The Government has earned tax revenue of Rs 658 million, in the past five years, from local TV stations for telecasting imported films, tele-dramas and commercials, Parliament was told on Friday.


Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, Independent Television Networks, Telshan Network Pvt. Ltd., IWS Holding Pvt. Ltd., EAP Networks Pvt Ltd., Maharaja Organisations Pvt Ltd, MGMR Networks Pvt Ltd, Power House Pvt Ltd., Television and Radio Network, People’s Media Network Pvt Ltd., Voice of Asia Network Pvt. Ltd., Dialog Television Pvt. Ltd. and VIS Broadcasting Pvt. Ltd. have paid a taxes amounting to a total of Rs 658,133,930, a document tabled by the government, in response to a question raised by UNP Colombo District MP Ravi Karunanayke, said.


Maharaja Organisations Pvt. Ltd. (MTV Channel Pvt. Ltd.) has paid Rs 389,136,900 during the same period. The SLRC has paid Rs 89 million, the ITN Rs 50 million, EAP Networks (Swarnavahini) Pvt. Ltd. Rs 63 million, EAP Networks (ETV) Rs 34 million.


In 2010 alone, Rs 126 million had been paid by these TV stations. In 2009, they paid Rs 151 million, in 2008 Rs 132 million, in 2007 Rs 170 million and in 2006 Rs 77 million, as taxes for telecasting imported films, tele-dramas and commercials.
