Postal workers agitate over attempts to sell heritage buildings of the Dept.

By Chaminda Silva

Convenor of the Joint Postal Trade Unions Chinthaka Bandara yesterday said that there was an attempt by the government to sell heritage buildings of the Department in Kandy, Galle Fort and Nuwara Eliya for a song on the pretext of promoting tourism.

Bandara said the post office in the Galle Fort was one of the five oldest post offices in the country.

"If those buildings are to be renovated that has to be done by Postal Department and if the government ignores the warnings of the postal workers they will resort to strong trade union action," he warned.

Minister of Posts, H. M. Abdul Hameem, contacted for comment, said there was a proposal to develop the above mentioned post offices and he was also against the sale of buildings belonging to the postal department.

He said he would discuss the matter with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe.
