Rajitha wants a second DG to handle Health Ministry finance

Health Minister, Dr Rajitha Senaratne yesterday said that a second Director General would be appointed to manage the finances of the Health Ministry.

Participating at the opening ceremony of the new clinic complex and Cardiology Unit at the Kalutara General Hospital, Dr Senaratne said the ministry was planning to improve the quality of its services by appointing a separate Director General to handle its funds. He said one of his objectives was to obtain four percent of the GDP for the health sector.

The project was completed at a cost of Rs. 310 million.

The Health Minister said the foundation stone for the new Nursing Faculty would be laid within the Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital premises early next month. The total cost of the project would be Rs. 200 million, he said. A separate faculty would be set up in collaboration with the Sri Jayewardenepura University for Allied Health Sciences and paramedical services. The main aim of those two projects was to produce graduates for foreign employment.

However, when the issue of creating a position for a second Director General position with a non medical background came up in August last year the Health Secretary at the time, Anura Jayawickrema said he was unaware of the move.
