Executed policemen honoured

Four hundred police officers who were executed by the LTTE at Rupaskulam in Ampara in 1990 after their surrender to the terrorists on the instructions of the then government were commemorated yesterday at a special ceremony conducted near the memorial at the Ampara Police Superintendent’s Office attended by Deputy Inspector General of Police Nuwan Wedisinghe.

Religious observances were conducted by Chief Incumbent of Ampara Vidyananda Pirivena Kirindiwela Somaratne Thera, Pusari of Manikka Pullayar Kovil Saviraj Sharma, and Moulavi Mohammed Mahasiri.

Along with DIG Wedisinghe, the parents of the murdered policemen and their children paid a tribute to them on the occasion.

A large gathering also attended the ceremony. It included Superintendent of Police in charge of Ampara Samantha Wijesekera, ASPs Suriyarachchi and Chandrapala, and HQI Ampara Chief Inspector D.C.D Illangakoon
