JO forming new alliance under MR’s leadership to contest elections

Major rally in Trinco on July 03

The Joint Opposition (JO) is forming a new alliance to contest local government and provincial council elections under the leadership of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, according JO sources.

Asked whether minority parties would join the alliance in the offing, a JO member said discussions were on and the new political movement would have minority representation.

JO sources said the new alliance would be formed in time for local government polls expected next September. "The government cannot go on postponing elections indefinitely owing to public resentment and we expect polls in September," they said.

The JO would hold a major rally in Trincomalee on July 03 against the Economic and Technological Cooperation Agreement (ETCA), the sale of the Trincomalee oil tank farm and the Mattala Airport to Indians, sources said, warning that the government was in the process of creating a police state and that was why battle hardened police commandos were deployed to crush student protests.
